Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) (Santoprene ® or Sarlink ®)

Thermoplastic Elastomer is a rubber-like elastic material with a fair resistance to moderately harsh chemicals and a resistance to ozone. Commonly found as the base material for products such as weather stripping, gaskets, expansion joints, window seals, and other barriers, TPE is able to replace rubber in many applications.

The rubber-like quality of TPE actually comes from the process in which TPE is made, where a mix of polymers and rubbers are joined together to create a cross-linking bond (when one polymer chain is linked to another) with high elastic properties.

Unlike rubber, TPE is a recyclable material because it is a thermoplastic. Also, additives are not typically needed for most manufactured TPE products. As a result, TPE is a more environmentally friendly alternative to rubber, as well as a more cost effective manufacturing alternative to other materials due to ease of standardization.
