Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) is a terpolymer, composed of the three materials in its name: acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. Usual compositions are about half styrene with the balance divided between butadiene and acrylonitrile. It can be processed by any of the standard thermoplastic processing methods including extrusion and injection molding.

This material is very tough, and is known for being stronger than pure polystyrene. Also, it has resilient qualities to many acids, alkalis, oils, and alcohols, though some harsh chemicals may cause the material to swell.

Examples made from ABS can be found in many day-to-day objects, including children's building blocks, automotive bumpers, medical devices, containers, and even some furniture. ABS is able to remain stable in temperatures under 176˚F, allowing for a large number of possible applications.
